Hornsea Mere
Meet at the start of the track from Seaton to
Wassand Hall, just off the B1244 west of Hornsea. (TA171467)
Our first walk of the year takes us to woods and the open water of
Hornsea Mere. The extensive woodland here is home to a variety of wintering
birds. We will walk to Decoy Bay to view the open water at the western end
of the Mere and to the town end of the Mere where a variety of wildfowl
should be seen. We will then move on the Mr Moo’s at Skipsea for lunch and
an afternoon walk along the nature trail there. Café and toilets at Mr Moo’s.

Tophill Low
Meet in the car park at Tophill
Low following signs from the A164 at Watton. (Grid Ref TA073487).
A day’s bird watching at the best reserve in East Yorkshire; owned by
Yorkshire Water and administered by the Hull Valley Wildlife Group. Over a
dozen hides provide views over two reservoirs, lagoons, reed beds and
woodland. Unless there has been a very big freeze the site should be full of
waders and wildfowl as well as a selection of woodland and garden birds.

Barlow Common & Southfield Reservoir
Meet in the car park at Barlow
Common Nature Reserve following the A1041 from the new Selby by-pass and
taking the second turning into Barlow (SE6382820).
We will spend the morning on Barlow Common, a Selby Borough Council
reserve with areas of open grassland, woodland and ponds. In the afternoon
we will drive to Southfield Reservoir beside the Aire & Calder Canal.
The reservoir attracts a number of wintering wildfowl at a time of year when
there should be little angling or sailing activity. Toilets at Barlow Common

Eccup, West Yorkshire
Meet in the car park at the New
Inn, Eccup, leaving the A1 at Collingham following signs for Harewood House.
Turn right at the lights in Harewood and follow the A61 then A656. Leave the
A659 at Weardley for Eccup (SE288430)
We will spend the day in one of the best red kite areas in Yorkshire. In
the morning we will walk towards Weardley and the outdoor TV set of
Emmerdale. In the afternoon we will walk to the viewpoint on Eccup Dam. Good
numbers of kites, buzzards, and woodland, farmland and wetland birds should
be seen. We will have lunch at the New Inn.

Broomfleet & Drewton
Meet on the grassed parking area
beside the angling pool on the canal side after following Landing Lane from
Broomfleet (Grid Ref SE870272)
We will spend the morning walking in the Broomfleet area following a
series of roads and footpaths which will take us from the pools beside the
tile factory to the bridge at Weighton Lock which overlooks the mudflats of
Whitton Sands. A wide variety of farmland birds, wildfowl and waders should
be seen. In the afternoon we will drive to Drewton Manor for a short walk to
look for red kites. No facilities

Blakey Ridge & Scaling Dam
Meet on the gravelled parking
area beside the minor road from Hutton-le-Hole to Castleton. (Grid Ref
SE684989)
This moorland ridge overlooks Rosedale and Farndale and provides rich
heather and bilberry habitat. We will follow the trail along a disused
railway line in search for specialist moorland birds. The area has, in
recent years, held breeding ring ouzel, stonechat, whinchat and grouse,
although these can be difficult to find and are not guaranteed. If we have
had a successful morning we will then drive to Scaling Dam for wetland
birds. No facilities.

Grannies Attic
Meet in the car park at Grannies
Attic beside the minor road from South Dalton to Market Weighton (SE929439)
Two walks in the South Dalton area. In the morning we will walk towards
South Dalton in the hope of seeing the local kites and buzzards. In the
afternoon we will walk to Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit, a flower and butterfly
rich Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve. No facilities

Old Moor Wetlands, Wath on Dearne.
Meet in the car park at Old Moor
Wetlands RSPB reserve. (SE422022)
We will spend the day in the Wath area, concentrating our morning walks
on the RSPB’s excellent new reserve at Old Moor where a series of pools
and reedbeds attract good numbers of wildfowl and waders in late summer.
After lunch we may explore either Broomhill Flash, Edderthorpe Flash or
Wombwell Ings, each of which are about a mile away. Toilets, café and
Information Centre.

Scarborough Holbeck & Scalby Mills
Meet in the public car park on
the site of the former Holbeck Hall Hotel off the A165. (Grid Ref TA045872).
The morning will be spent exploring the Holbeck area with a walk along
the cliff slopes to the rock pools near the old swimming pool. The area is
one of the most reliable for Mediterranean gull, while a number of waders
roost on the seawalls and feed on the shore. After lunch we will drive to
Scalby Mills for a walk along the promenade to the old open air theatre.
More wildfowl and waders should be seen, not only on the shore and sea, but
also on the theatre lake. Toilets at the Sealife Centre, Scalby Mills.

Stone Creek
Meet beside the track to Stone
Creek House, best accessed by leaving the A1033 at Ottringham and following
signs through Sunk Island. (Grid Ref TA234190).
A day by the Humber estuary. We start with a morning walk east to the
battery where scrub, farmland and saltmarsh will provide a variety of birds.
After lunch we will walk the embankment some of the way towards Cherry Cobb
Sands where a rising tide should be driving ever larger flocks of waders and
wildfowl into view. No facilities
