2007
Sunday 14th January 10.00
Hornsea Mere
Meet at the start of the track from Seaton to Wassand Hall, just off the B1244 west of Hornsea. (TA171467)
Our first walk of the year takes us to woods and the open water of Hornsea Mere. The extensive woodland here is home to a variety of wintering birds. We will walk to Decoy Bay to view the open water at the western end of the Mere and to the town end of the Mere where a variety of wildfowl should be seen. We will then move on the Mr Moo’s at Skipsea for lunch and an afternoon walk along the nature trail there. Café and toilets at Mr Moo’s.

Sunday 11th February 10.00
Tophill Low
Meet in the car park at Tophill Low following signs from the A164 at Watton. (Grid Ref TA073487).
A day’s bird watching at the best reserve in East Yorkshire; owned by Yorkshire Water and administered by the Hull Valley Wildlife Group. Over a dozen hides provide views over two reservoirs, lagoons, reed beds and woodland. Unless there has been a very big freeze the site should be full of waders and wildfowl as well as a selection of woodland and garden birds. Toilets at Visitor Centre.

Sunday 11th March 10.00
Barlow Common & Southfield Reservoir
Meet in the car park at Barlow Common Nature Reserve following the A1041 from the new Selby by-pass and taking the second turning into Barlow (SE6382820).
We will spend the morning on Barlow Common, a Selby Borough Council reserve with areas of open grassland, woodland and ponds. In the afternoon we will drive to Southfield Reservoir beside the Aire & Calder Canal. The reservoir attracts a number of wintering wildfowl at a time of year when there should be little angling or sailing activity. Toilets at Barlow Common

Sunday 1st April 10.00 (Please note that the date is one week earlier than usual)
Eccup, West Yorkshire
Meet in the car park at the New Inn, Eccup, leaving the A1 at Collingham following signs for Harewood House. Turn right at the lights in Harewood and follow the A61 then A656. Leave the A659 at Weardley for Eccup (SE288430)
We will spend the day in one of the best red kite areas in Yorkshire. In the morning we will walk towards Weardley and the outdoor TV set of Emmerdale. In the afternoon we will walk to the viewpoint on Eccup Dam. Good numbers of kites, buzzards, and woodland, farmland and wetland birds should be seen. We will have lunch at the New Inn.

Sunday 13th May 10.00
Broomfleet & Drewton
Meet on the grassed parking area beside the angling pool on the canal side after following Landing Lane from Broomfleet (Grid Ref SE870272)
We will spend the morning walking in the Broomfleet area following a series of roads and footpaths which will take us from the pools beside the tile factory to the bridge at Weighton Lock which overlooks the mudflats of Whitton Sands. A wide variety of farmland birds, wildfowl and waders should be seen. In the afternoon we will drive to Drewton Manor for a short walk to look for red kites. No facilities

Sunday 10th June 10.00
Blakey Ridge & Scaling Dam
Meet on the gravelled parking area beside the minor road from Hutton-le-Hole to Castleton. (Grid Ref SE684989)
This moorland ridge overlooks Rosedale and Farndale and provides rich heather and bilberry habitat. We will follow the trail along a disused railway line in search for specialist moorland birds. The area has, in recent years, held breeding ring ouzel, stonechat, whinchat and grouse, although these can be difficult to find and are not guaranteed. If we have had a successful morning we will then drive to Scaling Dam for wetland birds. No facilities.

Sunday 8th July 10.00
Grannies Attic
Meet in the car park at Grannies Attic beside the minor road from South Dalton to Market Weighton (SE929439)
Two walks in the South Dalton area. In the morning we will walk towards South Dalton in the hope of seeing the local kites and buzzards. In the afternoon we will walk to Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit, a flower and butterfly rich Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve. No facilities

Sunday 9th September 10.00
Old Moor Wetlands, Wath on Dearne.
Meet in the car park at Old Moor Wetlands RSPB reserve. (SE422022)
We will spend the day in the Wath area, concentrating our morning walks on the RSPB’s excellent new reserve at Old Moor where a series of pools and reedbeds attract good numbers of wildfowl and waders in late summer. After lunch we may explore either Broomhill Flash, Edderthorpe Flash or Wombwell Ings, each of which are about a mile away. Toilets, café and Information Centre.

Sunday 11th November 10.00
Scarborough Holbeck & Scalby Mills
Meet in the public car park on the site of the former Holbeck Hall Hotel off the A165. (Grid Ref TA045872).
The morning will be spent exploring the Holbeck area with a walk along the cliff slopes to the rock pools near the old swimming pool. The area is one of the most reliable for Mediterranean gull, while a number of waders roost on the seawalls and feed on the shore. After lunch we will drive to Scalby Mills for a walk along the promenade to the old open air theatre. More wildfowl and waders should be seen, not only on the shore and sea, but also on the theatre lake. Toilets at the Sealife Centre, Scalby Mills.

Sunday 9th December 10.00
Stone Creek
Meet beside the track to Stone Creek House, best accessed by leaving the A1033 at Ottringham and following signs through Sunk Island. (Grid Ref TA234190).
A day by the Humber estuary. We start with a morning walk east to the battery where scrub, farmland and saltmarsh will provide a variety of birds. After lunch we will walk the embankment some of the way towards Cherry Cobb Sands where a rising tide should be driving ever larger flocks of waders and wildfowl into view. No facilities
