East Yorkshire Wildlife Explorers You may recall me standing up at an evening meeting last autumn asking for any volunteers prepared to assist me with setting up our own Wildlife Explorers Club, and many of you have since inquired about its progress. I am happy to say that after much necessary paperwork, plenty of careful planning and the support of four fellow adults from our local group we are now up and truly running! In January we started the indoor meeting with a meagre four children and lots of adults, but all four were enthusiastic and have continued to come to both the monthly indoor and outdoor meetings, joined I hasten to add, by a growing number of equally enthusiastic children and we can now expect up to 15 children (and their parents) at our events. We have visited a range of sites locally as we are attracting youngsters from a wide area and we have looked at all sorts of things. We have made sculptures on the beach at South Landing and looked at freshwater invertebrates at Boynton. We studied garden birds at Sewerby and just recently were fascinated by moths at Thorpe Hall. As you can see, Wildlife Explorers is not just about birds and we have put together a range of activities to develop the enthusiasm that these children already possess. They are often accompanied by their parents who on some occasions have to be moved out of the way so that their offspring can get a decent look! When I was growing up I benefited from the interest that my parents had in natural history but it was the Young Ornithologists Club and its leaders that really developed my individual passion for the world around me, I only hope that we can continue in that vein, so wish us luck. "I think Wildlife Explorers is great. I have enjoyed the different trips I’ve been on and I love making things, especially the paper dart bird that flew across the room!" Sarah age 8 "I like Wildlife Explorers because I’ve learnt to spot lots of different birds, and where to find them. My favourite bird is a puffin. We saw some at Bempton. I also like the blackbird because of its song." Katie age 10 If you know of any children ( age 7 – 12) who would be interested in joining us then please contact me on 01964 532827 for an autumn programme. Margaret Boyd |
